WordPress or Shopify: which is right for your business?

WordPress and Shopify are two of the most popular ways to build a website, and both are excellent. The right choice depends on what you are trying to do. Here is how to think about it without the jargon.

When Shopify makes sense

Shopify is built for selling. If your main goal is an online store, it handles the hard parts for you: secure checkout, payments, stock, shipping and orders all work out of the box.

It is a good fit if selling products is the heart of your business, you want a reliable store without much fuss, and you are happy working within a proven system. The trade-off is that it is less flexible for content-heavy sites and unusual layouts.

When WordPress makes sense

WordPress is more of a blank canvas. It powers a huge share of the web, from small brochure sites to large content-driven businesses. It is a strong choice when you want a bespoke design, lots of pages or content, and the freedom to add features over time.

You can sell on WordPress too, using WooCommerce, which is a good option when your store sits alongside a bigger site with plenty of other content.

The honest answer

For a pure online store where selling is everything, Shopify is often the simplest, most reliable choice. For a content-led site, a bespoke design, or a mix of content and selling, WordPress usually gives you more room to grow.

In practice the platform matters less than the thinking behind the site. A great site on either platform beats a poor site on the other every time.
